Built-In Bookshelves

Hayden Lake, IdahoClosets

A fireplace wall becomes a full-height library feature in this room. Dark built-in bookshelves flank the fireplace, with integrated lighting tracing the shelves and giving books and display pieces a defined place. The central surround stays simple and uninterrupted, allowing the fire and the illuminated shelving to share the focus. At both ends, vertical wood slat panels introduce warmth and texture against the dark cabinetry and walls. Their repeated lines echo the height of the shelving, while the wood floor ties the feature wall back into the room. Rather than adding freestanding furniture, the built-ins create one cohesive wall for storage, display, and a fireside gathering space.

Built-In Bookshelves

Project Highlights

  • A Fireplace at the Center

The dark central surround anchors the composition, with matching shelf bays framing the fire.

  • Light Built into the Shelves

Integrated lighting defines each open shelf and brings depth to the dark cabinetry.

  • Vertical Wood Texture

Slatted wood panels soften the feature wall and connect it visually to the warm wood floor.

  • One Cohesive Wall

Full-height shelving and the fireplace surround read as a unified architectural feature rather than separate pieces of furniture.

Dark and Romantic!

A custom library built-in featuring subtle lighting grooves carved into each shelf, creating a warm, inviting ambience you won't find anywhere else in the house.
